MAIL ORDER BRIDE
Hallmark Channel, 9pm et/pt Saturday, Nov. 8
By Susan Stewart
Daphne Zuniga isn’t your average mail-order bride. She’s a flirtatious con woman who arrives in Wyoming with all the wrong clothes.
Fleeing from her dastardly, mustachioed mobster boss (Greg Evigan), she poses as the woman promised to a clean-shaven rancher (Cameron Bancroft).
He’s such a pacifist, he won’t even use a gun against cattle rustlers.
Anybody who’s ever watched a Western – or a TV movie, for that matter – can guess what will happen: Zuniga will trade her bustles for a plain plaid dress (Goodbye, city life!), argue with her rancher, sleep with her rancher, then there will be a big gunfight that will reveal that the rancher is the best kind of pacifist: a sharpshooting one.
Within its comfortable predictability, Mail Order Bride boasts some witty moments: Zuniga picking the pockets of the rancher’s neighbors during a square dance to welcome her, and a crusty old ranch hand disguising himself in a bonnet and dress.
This cozy Western follows the rules, yet packs a punch.
