HERE’S HOPING FOR RAIN (OR SNOW)

Weekend overflowing with sports, movies and original series.

There’s nothing quite like bad weather to ease the guilt of plopping down on the couch, remote control and beverage within easy reach, for a weekend marathon of TV. Nothing in particular, just TV.

This weekend, a load of new and original programming makes this weekend the perfect time to sit back, wrap yourself in a toasty blankey and drift off into mindless, tension-melting TV bliss, even if the sun is shining outside.

For those looking for sports, NBA and college basketball and NFL and college football, plus NASCAR, will be airing throughout the weekend – sports won’t be difficult to find. And Versus is airing the 2008 PBR Finals – bull riding.

But this weekend is about more than sports.

On Friday, there are fresh episodes of a bunch of shows, including Cartoon Network’s dazzling Star Wars: The Clone Wars, USA’s Starter Wife, CMT’s curious Crossroads: Def Leppard and Taylor Swift, Animal Planet’s new documentary series Whale Wars and the third season premiere of Discovery Channel’s great Survivorman.

Throughout the weekend (check your local listings or www.legendoftheseeker.com), the first season of Legend of the Seeker continues with a new episode.

On Saturday, Hallmark Channel has one of its feel-good movies, Mail Order Bride (see “Worth Watching Tonight”) and fans of iCarly on Nickelodeon will probably want to check out the new movie iGo to Japan, plus Nick’s new series True Jackson.

Adults will probably want to flip over to the season premiere of Fox Reality Channel’s My Bare Lady 2: Open for Business or HBO’s fantastic Taxicab Confessions: New York, New York Part 3.

Sunday is almost always overflowing with shows worth checking out, from HBO’s Entourage to Showtime’s Brotherhood (this week’s episode is especially good), to ABC’s Desperate Housewives and Fox’s animated comedies.

But this Sunday, there’s more original programming than usual, including Style Network’s new Ruby – a touching unscripted show about an obese woman. HBO is premiering a new comedy, Summer Heights High, which is an unusual sketch show that people will either love or hate.

And TV One is debuting a multipart series about successful black people (timely, given the presidential election) called 100 Greatest Black Power Moves.

That’s a lot of TV, so much in fact that, in addition to plopping on the couch with booze in hand, you may want to turn off the phone – no point in having someone guilt you into leaving the house (gasp!).
