Around the remote: Television picks for the week of May 31-June 6

DON’T MISS:

“2009 MTV MOVIE AWARDS” _ Goofball Andy Samberg lands his first big hosting gig as our guide for this 18th annual bash, which tends to be oh-so-edgy and unpredictable. Hogging most of the nominations this year are “Twilight” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” But beyond the prizes, we can look forward to performances by, among others, Eminem and Kings of Leon, as well as sneak peeks of the new “Transformers,” “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” flicks. And let’s hope Samberg shares a few of his hilarious viral videos with us. 9 tonight, MTV.

OTHER BETS:

TONIGHT: We don’t know what will freak us out more in the new season of “Ice Road Truckers” _ the perilous cliffs, or the 70-below-zero temperatures. We’ll just stayed glued to the couch with our hot cocoa. 9 p.m., History Channel.

TONIGHT: They’ve promised a “shocking” conclusion to the second season of “Breaking Bad,” but we’re not sure how much more shock we can take from this addictive show. 10 p.m., AMC.

MONDAY: Sanjaya alert! The former “American Idol” curiosity is one of 10 B-list contestants competing on a new season of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” Our reaction? Sad. Just sad. 8 p.m., NBC

MONDAY: Jay Leno is out and Conan O’Brien is in as “The Tonight Show” enters a brand new era. But can the gangly redhead maintain those lofty ratings? Stay tuned. 11:35 p.m., NBC.

TUESDAY: “Earth 2100″ is an intriguing news special that explores the possible effects of climate change and population growth on the planet. Warning: It’s not a pretty picture. Bob Woodruff hosts. 9 p.m., ABC.

TUESDAY: Yet another murder happens on the season finale of “Law&Order: SVU,” and we’re pretty sure guest star Carol Kane had nothing to do with it. But keep an eye on her anyway. 10 p.m., NBC.

WEDNESDAY: “Law&Order” closes off its latest season with a case tied to the killing of a famous charity executive. That leads to allegations of stalking and blackmail _ and more work for Lupo and Bernard. 10 p.m., NBC.

THURSDAY: In the new drama series, “Royal Pains,” Mark Feuerstein plays a brash young physician who gets fired and then winds up working as a concierge doctor to the pampered residents of the Hamptons. Nice gig if you can get it. 10 p.m., USA.

FRIDAY: The second season of “Whale Wars” supposedly features “collisions at sea, harrowing nautical maneuvers and a near-death experience in an ice field.” But where’s Captain Ahab? 9 p.m., Animal Planet.

SATURDAY: In the TV film “Come Dance at My Wedding,” Brooke Nevin plays a woman who meets her estranged father (John Schneider) just weeks before tying the knot. Naturally, complications arise. Roma Downey and Zach Callahan also star. 9 p.m., Hallmark.
