MONDAY, JUNE 15

ZEKE AND LUTHER
And Kathy and Lily
When I was a freshman in high school, I begged my mother for a skateboard. This was years before skateboarding was a sport. It was an odd interest to the other teenagers, who sneered at me as they zipped by in their multicolored, big-wheeled roller skates.
After considerable pleading, my mother gave in and bought me a skateboard. It was pink, which says volumes about me.
Skateboarding, as it turned out, was a short-lived fascination. But for that brief time, I loved skateboards (I’d pay top dollar today for that little pink board).
So, if this were, say, 1978, I’d be all over Disney XD’s new series, Zeke and Luther.
It’s a single-camera comedy, meaning it’s not filmed in front of an audience and there’s no laugh track, which I give Disney XD credit for – keeping it a little edgy.
It’s about two teenagers – Zeke (Hutch Dano) and Luther (Adam Hicks) – who aspire to become professional skateboarders. Zeke’s little sister works as their agent. Only in a sitcom, right?
The show is sort of funny, but that’s from the perspective of someone who had a pink skateboard three decades ago. I’m sure it’s a modestly funny show for teenage boys. That is the intended audience, after all.
But, for me, tonight I’ll be tuning into Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List.
This show is teetering on the edge of overstaying its welcome. But Lily Tomlin is the guest star tonight. And, based on a clip, it looks funny.
Zeke and Luther premieres on Disney XD tonight at 8:30pm et/pt. Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List is on Bravo at 10pm et/pt.
